NDA/NA Exam- National Defence Academy

NDA/NA Exam is a national level exam organized by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) twice a year ( 2 times in a year)to recruit candidates in Army, Navy and Air Force. It is a two-tier examination, wherein, candidates qualifying the written test will also have to clear the SSB interview round.

Total Vacancies: 415

National Defence Academy: Approx 370 (208 for Army, 42 for Navy and 120 for Air (including 28 for Ground Duties) 
Naval Academy: 45 (10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme) approx
Vacancies are provisional and may be changed depending on the availability of training capacity of National Defence Academy and Indian Naval Academy.

Eligibility for nda/na exam

Nationality:

Apart from Indian origin, candidates from other countries can also appear for NDA 2019. For the same, the candidate must either be

An India citizen

A citizen of Bhutan or,

A citizen of Nepal

Tibetan refugees who came over to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible to appear for NDA 2019.

An Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible to appear for NDA 2019 exam.

Note: The candidate from other countries other than India must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

As per Age Limit:–

Minimum Age: 16.5 years

Maximum Age: 19.5 years

Candidates born not earlier than January 2, 2001, and not later than January 1, 2004, are eligible for the exam. 

As per Educational Qualification:–

Army Wing of National Defence Academy: The Candidates willing to apply for Indian Army must possess a class 12/HSC in 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy of National Defence Academy: The Candidates willing to apply for Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy must possess a class 12/HSC in 10+2 pattern of School Education with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University

As per Physical standard:

Candidates willing to appear for NDA 2019 must be physically and mentally fit, according to the prescribed physical standards of the conducting authority i.e. SSB (Services Selection Board). A candidate recommended by the SSB will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers.

The candidate must possess a good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties. The candidates selected by the authority will be admitted to the academy for further training.

Minimum height required is 157 cm for Army, Navy and Naval Academy while 162.5 cm for Air Force. A leverage of 5 cm is provided to Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern regions.

Marital Sex: Candidates must be unmarried in order to appear for the NDA 2019 exam.

Gender: Only male candidates are eligible to apply for NDA 2019.

NDA II Exam Pattern

All the questions in the exam will be objective i.e., Multiple Choice Questions will be asked. The medium of the exam will be bilingual( English+Hindi
) with a total of 900 marks. Out of 270 questions, 120 questions are from Mathematics and 150 questions from General Ability section.

There is the provision of negative marking as per the marks allotted to questions asked. The syllabus covered under NDA 2019 is of CBSE 10+2 standards.

NDA Exam Pattern for Mathematics and GAT

NDA 2019 was conducted in offline mode and all the questions were of MCQ type. The exam is held in both English and Hindi language.

NDA 2019 Marking Scheme

NDA consists of two sections- Mathematics and General ability test. In the Mathematics section, there will be a total of 120 questions of 300 marks.

All questions will carry 2.5 marks each, which will only be allotted for choosing the correct answer. 0.83 Marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

General ability test will comprise 600 marks; 200 marks are allotted to English and 400 marks in total are allotted to General Knowledge.

In this section, there will be a total of 150 questions, 50 from English and 100 from General Knowledge.

Candidates will be awarded 4 marks for each correct answer in this section.

A deduction of 1.33 Marks will be there for each wrong answer. There will be no mark for unanswered questions.


What Type of Questions are Asked in NDA Exam?

NDA will have questions from two sections mainly- Mathematics and General Ability section. The questions will mainly be asked of 10+2 level.

  • In mathematics, candidates must thoroughly prepare-
  • Arithmetic
  • Mensuration
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Statistics, etc.
  • For general ability section, it is important to prepare well for both the sub-sections, i.e., English and General Knowledge.
  • For the English section, candidates must focus on grammar, comprehension and reading abilities.
  • General knowledge questions can be asked from current events, physics, chemistry, general science, history, etc.

Most of the questions asked in the NDA exam will come from 10+2 level, especially in Mathematics. For preparing General Ability test section candidates should read the newspaper on a daily basis.
