NDA/NA Exam is a national level exam organized by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) twice a year ( 2 times in a year)to recruit candidates in Army, Navy and Air Force. It is a two-tier examination, wherein, candidates qualifying the written test will also have to clear the SSB interview round.

Eligibility for NDA/NA exam


Apart from Indian origin, candidates from other countries can also appear for NDA 2020. For the same, the candidate must either be

An India citizen

A citizen of Bhutan or,

A citizen of Nepal

Tibetan refugees who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible to appear for NDA 2020.

An Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible to appear for NDA 2019 exam.

Note: The candidate from other countries other than India must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

As per Educational Qualification:–

Army Wing of National Defence Academy: The Candidates willing to apply for the Indian Army must possess a class 12/HSC in 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy of National Defence Academy: The Candidates willing to apply for Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy must possess a class 12/HSC in 10+2 pattern of School Education with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

As per Physical standard:

Candidates willing to appear for NDA 2020 must be physically and mentally fit, according to the prescribed physical standards of the conducting authority i.e. SSB (Services Selection Board). A candidate recommended by the SSB will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers.

Undesirable health issues

The candidate must not be suffering from any of these minor conditions at the time of medical examination –

1.Wax (Ears)

2. Deviated Nasal Septum

3. Hydrocele / Phimosis

4. Condition of Overweight / Underweight

5. Under Sized Chest

6. Piles

7. Tonsillitis

8. Gynaecomastia

9. Varicocele

The candidate must possess good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties. The candidates selected by the authority will be admitted to the academy for further training.

Height and Weight Requirements

The Minimum height required is 157 cm for Army, Navy and Naval Academy while 162.5 cm for Air Force. A leverage of 5 cm is provided to Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern regions. On the other hand, for candidates belonging to Lakshadweep islands, the minimum height standard may be reduced by 2 cms.

In case the candidate wishes to be pilot in the Air Force, the following requirements will have to be kept in mind, due to constraints of the flying vehicle:

Visual Standards

The distance vision (corrected) of the candidate should be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye. Myopia should not be more than 2.5 D and hypermetropia not more than 3.5 D, including Astigmatism.

Case of Body Tattoos

  1. The candidate must ensure that any permanent body tattoos are present only on their inner side of the forearm. Under no circumstances will UPSC accept tattoos on the inside of elbow to the wrist and on the reverse side of palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand. Permanent body tattoos on any other part of the body are also not acceptable.
  2. In case the candidate happens to belong to a tribe where it is customary to have tattoo marks on the face or body, acceptance will be granted on a case to case basis, considering the traditions involved. The decision of authorities would be final in such instances.

Marital Sex: Candidates must be unmarried in order to appear for the NDA 2019 exam.

Gender: Only male candidates are eligible to apply for NDA 2020.

Important Facts about the NDA Exam

NDA examination is divided into two papers –Mathematics and General Ability. It aims to judge a candidate on his logical ability and general awareness. NDA 2020-21 is scheduled to be conducted on 19th April 2020. The Mathematics paper contains 300 marks while the General Ability test holds 600 marks. The written test will be of a total of 900 marks.

  1. For every incorrect response, 0.33 marks will be deducted as negative marking in the examination.
  2. After clearing the written test, candidates have to go through the SSB Interview. The interview process will have a total of 900 marks.
  3. 3-The question paper of Mathematics and PART B of General Ability test will be available in both English and Hindi languages.

How many students are selected in NDA?

There are usually approx. 368 vacancies for every single NDA recruitment and almost 2.5 lakh aspirants from all around the country participate in the written exam. Out of these, only 5000 to 6000(approx.) are called for the SSB interview. And finally, only the required number of candidates are selected for the training.

Does 12th marks matter in NDA?

There is no requirement for percentage.if you want to give NDA exam then you must have to pass 12th exam. marks and stream are do not matter. You cannot join NDA after 10th. The minimum qualification is 12th pass and the percentage does not count towards your selection.

Is PCM necessary for NDA?
